About This Song
Complete What You Started is built on a single sentence Paul wrote from a prison cell: "he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6). It is a song of faithful promise — not a song about human perseverance, but about God's.
The verses trace the promise backwards through a believer's story. It was God who called the name, God who drew near, God who planted the hope that conquered fear. And it is the same faithful hands that still hold the life — through every valley, through every night. The pre-chorus admits the honest part: most of the work is invisible. "Even when I cannot see, You are working deep in me."
The bridge is the song's spine, a slow build of negations that pile up into assurance: He doesn't abandon what His hands have made, He doesn't forsake, He doesn't grow weary, He doesn't let go. And the outro points the whole promise at its finish line — "until the day I see Your face" — because Philippians 1:6 is not vague optimism. It has a date on it: the day of Christ Jesus.
For the producer of the song, this promise is not abstract — it has a date on it of its own. On his wedding day, 10 June 1995, Philippians 1:6 was the sermon. He has always believed that the message that day was not for the congregation, but for him and his wife: God will finish what He started. Three decades on, this song is that same promise, still being stood upon.

"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).
Read the verse slowly and notice who does every verb. He began. He will carry it on. He will complete. The believer appears in the sentence only as the location of the work — "in you". That is the most liberating grammar in the New Testament.
Most of us secretly believe the opposite: God started something in me, and now it is my job to finish it. So we measure our progress, despair at our relapses, and wonder whether we have stalled the project beyond repair. The song's bridge answers with a string of things God does not do: He does not abandon what His hands have made. He does not grow weary. He does not let go. A builder may walk away from a half-built house; the Master never walks away from a half-finished soul.
That does not make effort meaningless — Paul tells the same Philippians to "work out your salvation" two chapters later. But it puts the effort in its right place: you are working out what God is working in (Philippians 2:12–13). The pressure of completion is not on you. When you grow weak, His grace remains. When you fall, He calls again. And on the day you see His face, the work will be finished — because the One who started it never stopped.
