Follow the Leader takes the oldest playground game there is and hands it to Jesus. "Step, step, here we go — Jesus leads and I will follow." The verses spell out what following looks like at a child's height: being kind and gentle, brave and true, loving friends the way Jesus does, and letting Him help "when I'm tempted to be mean."
The action bridge turns the game into a call-and-response — "Leader says: take one step. Kids say: yes, yes, yes!" — which is, quietly, the whole gospel of discipleship in kid form: Jesus calls, and the answer is yes. "When He calls, I say yes. Following Jesus is the best."

The first disciples were not given a theology exam — they were given two words: follow Me. Following is something even the smallest child understands, because they do it all day long. The question is never whether a child will follow a leader; it is which leader they will follow.
This song makes following Jesus concrete: step by step, day by day, with words and feet and hands. It teaches that obedience is not a list of rules but a Person to walk behind — "Stop and listen, clap and pray, I will walk in Jesus' way." And His sheep, of every size, hear His voice and follow Him (John 10:27).
