About This Song

Grace Upon Grace is built around the overflowing promise of John 1:16: “Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.” The song begins where every new day begins — not with what we have accomplished, but with mercy meeting us again.

Its central picture is simple and steady: wave after wave. Grace meets failure and grace meets faithfulness; grace is present when a person falls and when a person stands. It cannot be earned, bought or exhausted, because it comes from the fullness of Jesus.

The second verse looks forward as well as back. Yesterday's grace was real, but God also gives grace for today and for the road that cannot yet be seen. The bridge carries that assurance through morning, evening and the long night: Jesus has paid it all, and His love keeps moving toward His people.

Grace Upon Grace is a declaration that the Christian life is not sustained by a stored-up supply of personal strength. It is carried, day after day, by the unending grace of Christ.

Devotional

"Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given" (John 1:16).

John does not describe grace as a single gift left behind in the past. His words picture a continuing supply — grace arriving where grace has already been. The fullness of Jesus is never drained by yesterday's need, and it is never too small for today's weakness.

That is why the song can sing of grace when we fall and grace when we stand. We do not earn a place in God's presence through a better week, and we do not lose His welcome through a hard one. Jesus has paid what we could never pay, and His mercy meets us again.

There is also grace ahead. You may not know what the road holds, but Christ is already sufficient for it. When the night feels long, ask Him not only for strength to endure, but for the confidence to receive what He freely gives. Out of His fullness, there is grace for this moment — and grace for the next one too.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Morning breaks, the light comes in
Mercy meets me where I’ve been
Not because of what I’ve done
But from the fullness of the Son

Every failure, every fall
Still Your grace is over all
I don't have to earn my place
I am standing here by grace

[Pre-Chorus]
Wave after wave
Day after day
You never run dry
You never run dry

[Chorus]
Grace upon grace
Again and again
Grace when I fall
Grace when I stand

Grace for today
Grace for the road
Out of Your fullness
You overflow

Grace upon grace
Again and again
More than enough
From beginning to end

Jesus, my hope
Jesus, my song
Grace upon grace
Keeps carrying me on

[Verse 2]
I don't live on yesterday
You have given grace today
For the road I cannot see
There is grace ahead of me

When I'm weak, You still are strong
When I'm lost, You lead me on
Every fear I have to face
Meets another wave of grace

[Pre-Chorus]
Wave after wave
Day after day
You never run dry
You never run dry

[Chorus]
Grace upon grace
Again and again
Grace when I fall
Grace when I stand

Grace for today
Grace for the road
Out of Your fullness
You overflow

Grace upon grace
Again and again
More than enough
From beginning to end

Jesus, my hope
Jesus, my song
Grace upon grace
Keeps carrying me on

[Bridge]
I could never earn it
I could never buy it
Jesus, You have paid it all

I could never lose it
Your love keeps moving
Wave after wave when I call

Grace in the morning
Grace in the evening
Grace when the night feels long

Out of Your fullness
Over and over
Grace keeps carrying me on

[Final Chorus]
Grace upon grace
Again and again
Grace when I fall
Grace when I stand

Grace for today
Grace for the road
Out of Your fullness
You overflow

Grace upon grace
Again and again
More than enough
From beginning to end

Jesus, my hope
Jesus, my song
Grace upon grace
Keeps carrying me on

[Outro]
Wave after wave
Day after day
Grace upon grace
All of the way
