About This Song
His Glory Passing By draws on Moses' encounter with God in Exodus 33. Moses asks to see God's glory; God responds by placing him in a cleft in the rock and covering him as His glory passes. The song follows that image from the mercy that sheltered Moses to the refuge believers find in Jesus.
The verses trace a biblical movement: God's goodness revealed to Moses, and God's glory seen in Christ's humility, suffering, and resurrection. The song's response is worship and a prayer for a life shaped by the goodness we behold—not fascination with wonders alone, but hands that serve and sincere love.
The outro holds together present trust and future hope: sheltered by grace now, longing to see Christ face to face. All glory belongs to God.
Devotional
“When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.”
— Exodus 33:22
Moses asked the most audacious thing a creature can ask: “Show me Your glory.” And remarkably, God did not refuse. He simply protected. The full sight of His glory would have killed Moses. So He hid him in a cleft of rock and covered him with His hand.
This is grace in motion. The glory you cannot bear, He shields you from. The glimpse you can bear, He gives. And every cleft of rock in scripture eventually points to the Rock—Christ, our hiding place, where the holiness of God meets us not in destruction but in love.
You were made to behold His glory. But you behold it the way a creature must: from the safe place He has prepared. In Christ, you are already in the cleft.
Lyrics
[Verse 1] Moses prayed, Lord, let me see The glory of Your majesty You knew the weight he could not bear And made a place of mercy there Within the rock, beneath Your hand You gave Your servant room to stand You spoke Your name, Your goodness shone The glory, Lord, was Yours alone [Chorus] Hide me in Your mercy Hold me in Your grace Jesus, You're my refuge My safe and holy place I bow before Your glory You lift my eyes to see The love that brought You to the cross Has made a way for me [Verse 2] Now in the face of Christ we see Your glory clothed in humility The hands that healed, the feet that bled The crown of thorns upon Your head You bore our sins upon the tree The righteous One for souls like me You rose and broke the grave’s dark hold Through You we come with hearts made bold [Chorus] Hide me in Your mercy Hold me in Your grace Jesus, You're my refuge My safe and holy place I bow before Your glory You lift my eyes to see The love that brought You to the cross Has made a way for me [Bridge] More than wonders I can see Let Your goodness work in me Teach these hands to serve like You Make my love sincere and true When the road is marked with pain You are worthy just the same Till my faith gives way to sight Keep me walking in Your light [Final Chorus] Hide me in Your mercy Hold me in Your grace Jesus, You're my refuge My safe and holy place I bow before Your glory You lift my eyes to see The love that brought You to the cross Has made a way for me [Outro] Once sheltered as Your glory passed One day to see Your face at last Until that day, my song will be All glory, Jesus, unto Thee
