About This Song

I Run to Your Name begins with familiar efforts to make life feel secure: checking the locks, counting what has been saved, and making another plan. Planning and providing are not wrong. But the song asks what can steady a heart when control cannot promise peace.

Proverbs 18:10 pictures the name of the Lord as a fortified tower. In Scripture, God's name speaks of who He is—His character and faithfulness—not a phrase that works like a charm. The following proverb contrasts that refuge with wealth imagined as an impregnable wall. The song turns from self-made certainty to trust in the Lord.

That trust does not mean withdrawing from ordinary responsibilities. The second verse keeps working, sharing, praying, and welcoming the help of faithful friends. The bridge grounds hope in Jesus: His cross and resurrection, and the life He gives. The refuge is not a guarantee that hardship will never come; it is the faithful God to whom we can run in every season.

Devotional

A Refuge Stronger Than Our Plans

Read Proverbs 18:10–11 and Psalm 20:7. Proverbs sets two pictures side by side: the Lord’s name as a strong tower, and wealth imagined as a high wall. The contrast is about the place we put our ultimate trust. Money, planning, locks, and preparation can serve useful purposes, but none can carry the weight of being our deepest security.

To run to God’s name is to turn toward the God who has revealed Himself as faithful, just, merciful, and near. It is not repeating a phrase to guarantee that nothing painful will happen. The song is honest about shaking ground, long nights, and courage that fades; its confidence is that Jesus remains a refuge through them.

Notice that trust does not make the singer passive. The song still speaks of working, planting, sharing, praying, and letting a faithful friend draw near. Depending on God can include wise preparation, asking for help, and taking practical steps to care for yourself and others.

What are you trying to control today? Name it honestly before God. Then identify one responsible step you can take and one burden you need to entrust to Him. Pray: “Lord, You are my strong tower. Keep my hope in Your character, help me act wisely, and teach me to receive the help You provide through others. Amen.”

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I checked the locks and counted what I’d saved
Made one more plan to keep the fear away
I called it peace when everything looked right
But still lay wide awake at night

I built my walls with all that I could hold
And told myself that I was in control
But through the cracks, Your mercy found a way
And taught my restless heart to pray

[Pre-Chorus]
When the ground beneath me shakes
You are the refuge that remains
I turn from all I cannot keep
To You, the One who carries me

[Chorus]
I run to Your name, I run to Your name
Strong tower standing through wind and rain
Higher than the walls I could ever raise
Jesus, my shelter, my hiding place

When the night is long and my courage fades
Your faithful love will not give way
Through every season, through joy and pain
I run to Your name, I run to Your name

[Verse 2]
I’ll work these hands and plant the seed
Share what I have with those in need
Make room for love, make time for prayer
And trust tomorrow to Your care

I’ll let a faithful friend draw near
And speak the fears I’ve buried here
Together we will seek Your face
And find our courage in Your grace

[Pre-Chorus]
When the ground beneath me shakes
You are the refuge that remains
I turn from all I cannot keep
To You, the One who carries me

[Chorus]
I run to Your name, I run to Your name
Strong tower standing through wind and rain
Higher than the walls I could ever raise
Jesus, my shelter, my hiding place

When the night is long and my courage fades
Your faithful love will not give way
Through every season, through joy and pain
I run to Your name, I run to Your name

[Short Electric Guitar Break]

[Bridge]
Your name is more than words I sing
You are my Saviour, Lord and King
You bore the cross, You broke the grave
Your risen life is strong to save

My heart, my future, all I am
I place within Your faithful hands
Whatever comes, this will remain
My hope is anchored in Your name

[Final Chorus]
I run to Your name, I run to Your name
Strong tower standing through wind and rain
Higher than the walls I could ever raise
Jesus, my shelter, my hiding place

When the night is long and my courage fades
Your faithful love will not give way
Through every season, through joy and pain
I run to Your name, I run to Your name

[Outro]
My strong tower, my hiding place
My heart finds rest within Your grace
Through every season, through joy and pain
Jesus, I run to Your name
