About This Song
“I Will Trust Your Heart / It Is Well” is a modern retelling of Horatio Spafford's beloved hymn “It Is Well with My Soul” — written after Spafford lost his four daughters at sea, yet could still write “whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well with my soul.” This song carries that same declaration into today: God is able to still the seas and move the mountains, but our trust does not rest on the outcome we receive. When I cannot see His hand, I will trust His faithful heart.
Devotional
There is a kind of faith that only suffering can teach. Horatio Spafford wrote “It Is Well” over the very waters that had taken his children — not because the pain was small, but because his God was bigger. Habakkuk made the same choice centuries earlier: though the fig tree does not bud, though every visible reason for hope fails, “yet I will rejoice in the LORD.” Notice that neither man said “it doesn't hurt.” They said “it is well” — a settled trust that runs deeper than circumstance. Perhaps today your seas are not still and your mountains have not moved. You do not have to pretend otherwise. But you can anchor your soul where they did: not in the outcome you receive, but in the heart of the God who stands with you. When you cannot see His hand, trust His heart.
Lyrics
[Verse 1] When peace like a river is mine When skies are clear above I lift my voice and praise the One Who holds me in His love But when the sorrows roll like waves And storms around me rise My soul will sing beneath the clouds And trust You through the night [Pre-Chorus] You are able, You are good You are faithful, always true You have never left Your own And You will keep me through [Chorus] Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul Though mountains may stand And the seas may not still I will trust Your perfect will Still my heart will bow before You Still my lips will praise Your name You are God upon the mountain You are God with me in the flame It is well It is well With my soul When I cannot see Your hand I will trust Your faithful heart [Verse 2] I know You rule the wind and waves And calm the raging sea I know Your hand can break the chains And set the captive free But if my road leads through the fire And not around the pain Then meet me in the burning place And I will bless Your name [Pre-Chorus] You are able, You are good You are faithful, always true You have never left Your own And You will keep me through [Chorus] Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul Though mountains may stand And the seas may not still I will trust Your perfect will Still my heart will bow before You Still my lips will praise Your name You are God upon the mountain You are God with me in the flame It is well It is well With my soul When I cannot see Your hand I will trust Your faithful heart [Bridge] My sin, not in part, but the whole Was nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more Praise the Lord, praise the Lord O my soul Christ has conquered Death is defeated Mercy has answered Grace has made me whole So whatever my lot You have taught me to say It is well, it is well With my soul If I am healed, then You are good If I must wait, then You are good If doors are opened, You are good If they stay closed, You're still good Not by the outcome I receive Not by the answers I can see My faith will stand on who You are The God who stands with me [Final Chorus] Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say It is well, it is well with my soul Though mountains may stand And the seas may not still I will trust Your perfect will Still my heart will bow before You Still my lips will praise Your name You are God upon the mountain You are God with me in the flame It is well It is well With my soul When I cannot see Your hand I will trust Your faithful heart [Outro] It is well It is well With my soul It is well It is well With my soul When I cannot see Your hand I will trust Your faithful heart Whatever my lot You have taught me to say It is well, it is well With my soul
