About This Song

Jesus kom weer is a prayer for Pretoria, where the writer is from. At its heart is a simple conviction: Jesus is coming again, and while we wait, we pray for our city and live out His love. The song brings that concern for home together with the hope that Christ will make all things new.

Although the prayer began with Pretoria in mind, the lyrics do not name Pretoria. The song can therefore be used as a prayer for wherever home is for you—your city, town, village, or community. Its invitation is the same: while we wait for Jesus to return, we pray for the people around us and live out His love where we are.

Jeremiah 29:7 provides the foundation for praying for the city. Its original audience was the Jewish exiles in Babylon, who were instructed to seek the welfare of the city where they had been sent and to pray for it. It was not a prophecy addressed directly to Pretoria. Applied here, it encourages believers to care for their neighbours and seek the good of the place in which they live.

Revelation 22:20 gives voice to the longing for Jesus' return, while Revelation 21:4–5 anchors the chorus's hope that tears will end and all things will be made new. This hope does not invite withdrawal from the present. It calls for patient faithfulness: prayer for Pretoria's people, compassion for those who suffer, and lives that reflect Christ's love today.

The empty tomb in the second verse grounds that confidence in the risen Jesus. The bridge's burning lamps echo the call to readiness in Matthew 25. Readiness is not about calculating a date; it is about remaining faithful to the King while serving the people He has placed around us.

Devotional

Read Jeremiah 29:7, Revelation 22:20, and Revelation 21:4–5.

What does it mean to pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” while still caring deeply about the city in which we live? These are not competing desires. Hope in Christ's return gives us a reason to love our neighbours now, even when the needs around us feel overwhelming.

Jeremiah's instruction was first given to exiles in Babylon. They were not told to stop caring about their surroundings while they waited for God's future. They were told to seek the city's welfare and pray for it. For a prayer rooted in Pretoria, this offers a pattern of faithful concern—not a guarantee of prosperity, and not a claim that the city is the fulfilment of that ancient prophecy.

Pray for families under pressure, children who need protection, people looking for work, and neighbours carrying grief. Pray for honesty and wisdom among leaders, justice for those who are mistreated, and churches that serve with humility. Ask God to show you one practical way to become part of the care for which you pray.

Revelation's promise that God will wipe away tears is more than wishful thinking. It rests in the victory of Jesus, crucified and risen. Until He makes all things new, we can offer real compassion without pretending that we can repair everything ourselves.

Reflect: Who in Pretoria can you pray for by name today? What act of kindness, integrity, or service could follow that prayer? If you live elsewhere, bring your own city before God in the same spirit.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we long for Your return. We bring Pretoria before You: its homes, streets, schools, workplaces, and people. Comfort those who grieve, protect the vulnerable, and lead us in truth and justice. Teach us to love our neighbours in practical ways while we wait for You. Keep our hope alive and our hearts faithful. Amen.

Lees in Afrikaans

As jy elders woon, bring jou eie stad in dieselfde gees voor God.

[Koor]
Jesus kom weer,
Aan die Koning al die eer!
Elke traan sal dan verdwyn,
Waar Sy lig vir ewig skyn.
Laat die hoop in ons ontwaak:
Hy sal alles nuut kom maak.

[Vers 2]
Die dood kon Hom nie onderkry,
Die graf is leeg, en ons is vry.
Nou kan ons vasstaan sonder vrees,
Hy sal vir ewig met ons wees.
