About This Song
Joy Comes Through the Fire is the honest sequel to Joy Comes in the Morning. That song celebrates the sunrise; this one is sung while the flames are still burning. It opens with a confession — I didn't come untouched, I didn't come unscarred — and refuses every shortcut: the night didn't end when asked, the pain didn't suddenly leave. The joy here is not the absence of fire; it is the Presence in it. Like the three men in Babylon's furnace, the miracle is not always rescue from the flames — sometimes it is the fourth Man walking in them.
Devotional
King Nebuchadnezzar threw three bound men into the furnace — and then leapt to his feet: "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods" (Daniel 3:25).
Before the furnace, those three said the bravest sentence in the Old Testament: "The God we serve is able to deliver us... But even if he does not, we will not serve your gods" (Daniel 3:17–18). Praise that does not depend on the outcome — if You calm the storm, I will praise You; if the storm remains, I will praise You.
James dares to call this joy: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds" (James 1:2) — not because the fire is pleasant, but because of who walks in it with you, and what He forges there.
Reflect: What fire are you in right now? Stop asking only "When will it end?" and ask "Who is in here with me?" A broken hallelujah still counts as praise.
Lyrics
[Intro] I didn't come untouched I didn't come unscarred But I came with a hallelujah Still burning in my heart [Verse 1] I prayed for the mountain to move You taught my feet how to stand I asked You to silence the storm You held me there by the hand The night didn't end when I asked The pain didn't suddenly leave But there in the dark, You were near And that was enough to believe [Pre-Chorus] I don't have every answer But I know the One who stays When every light around me fades Jesus is the same [Chorus] Joy comes through the fire Not because the flames are gone Joy comes through the fire When I know I'm not alone I may bend, but I won't break I may weep, but still have faith Christ is with me in the trial Joy comes through the fire [Post-Chorus] Through the fire Through the fire Christ is with me Through the fire [Verse 2] Your way was not the easy road It led through sorrow and loss But Jesus, You walked it before me And carried the weight of the cross You never promised me comfort Or days without trouble and tears You promised that You would be with me And perfect Your strength in my fear [Pre-Chorus] I don't need every answer I know the One who stays When everything around me shakes Jesus is the same [Chorus] Joy comes through the fire Not because the flames are gone Joy comes through the fire When I know I'm not alone I may bend, but I won't break I may weep, but still have faith Christ is with me in the trial Joy comes through the fire [Build] Washed by mercy Held by grace Even here I'll seek Your face Not my will But Yours be done Christ my treasure Christ enough [Bridge] The fire cannot steal my joy The night cannot silence praise The grave could not hold my Saviour And fear will not rule my days The tears do not mean You've left The pain does not prove You're gone My hallelujah may sound broken But Jesus is still my song [Breakdown] If You calm the storm I will praise You If the storm remains I will praise You If You open the door I will follow If You ask me to wait I will trust You Not for silver Not for gold Not for comfort I can hold You are worthy You alone Jesus, You are still my hope [Final Chorus] Joy comes through the fire Not because the flames are gone Joy comes through the fire Because I know I'm not alone I may bend, but I won't break I may weep, but still have faith Christ is with me in the trial Joy comes through the fire [Outro] I didn't come untouched I didn't come unscarred But I came with a hallelujah Still burning in my heart
