About This Song

When the song Mad World by Tears for Fears was released, I was still a young boy. Its haunting portrayal of a confused and troubled world was both mesmerising and unsettling. As I grew older and experienced the peace Christ brought into my life, I wanted to write an answer to that despair. Only You Can Save Us draws particularly from John 16:33: in this world we will have trouble, but in Christ we have peace because He has overcome the world. It also reflects the biblical promise that Jesus rescues us from darkness, redeems us through His blood, conquers the grave and brings us into a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Devotional

Mad World painted a picture many of us know too well: a world that feels loud, confused and heavy, where people chase dreams that dissolve and hide their fear behind brave faces. Jesus never denied that reality. He said it plainly: "In this world you will have trouble." But He didn't stop there — "Take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

That is the turning point this song lives in. Our rescue does not come from silver or gold, from success, strength or self-improvement. Peter reminds us that we were redeemed "not with perishable things such as silver or gold... but with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18-19). The stone was moved. The grave stood bare. The living Christ has conquered, and every chain the darkness holds can be broken at His cross.

So when the noise of this mad world rises around you today, listen for the quieter, stronger voice. Hope is living in His Word. The proud may rise and the strong may fall, but His mercy still calls us all — and when this world finally fades away, His kingdom will remain.

Reflect: What are you trusting to save you — and is it something that can last? Bring it to the throne of mercy today, and let the One who overcame the world lead you home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The world is loud, the truth grows faint
We hide our fear beneath the paint
We chase the things that cannot last
While broken hearts are fading fast

[Pre-Chorus]
But through the noise, Your voice is heard
Hope is living in Your word

[Chorus]
Only You can save us
Only You can save
From the madness of this world
And the darkness of the grave
Jesus, You redeem us
By Your blood we are restored
Only You can save us
Christ, our risen Lord

[Verse 2]
The proud may rise, the strong may fall
But still Your mercy calls us all
The stone was moved, the grave stood bare
The living Christ has conquered there

[Pre-Chorus]
Through every night, Your light remains
Your cross has broken every chain

[Chorus]
Only You can save us
Only You can save
From the madness of this world
And the darkness of the grave
Jesus, You redeem us
By Your blood we are restored
Only You can save us
Christ, our risen Lord

[Bridge]
Not by silver
Not by gold
But Your precious blood alone
Every captive
Every soul
Can find mercy at Your throne
You are able
You are strong
You can make the broken whole
Through the darkness
Through it all
Jesus, You will lead us home

[Final Chorus]
Only You can save us
Only You can save
From the madness of this world
And the darkness of the grave
Jesus, You redeem us
By Your blood we are restored
Only You can save us
Christ, our risen Lord

[Outro]
When this mad world fades away
Your kingdom will remain
Only You can save us
Jesus, only You can save.
