About This Song

Our Refuge and Strength brings Psalm 46 into the anxious noise of ordinary life. The psalm begins with the earth giving way and waters roaring, yet it does not deny the chaos or pretend faith makes trouble disappear. Instead, it announces where safety is found within the storm: God is present. The song moves from collapsing roads and restless thoughts to screens, competing voices, and the fear of what lies ahead. Against each one, the repeated words “Be still, my soul; He is God” become a steady confession. Stillness here is not passivity. It is the deliberate release of control before the One whose open hand holds what feels too large for ours.

Devotional

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Psalm 46 does not describe a calm world. The earth gives way, mountains fall into the sea, waters roar, and nations are in uproar. Yet the repeated truth beneath every disturbance is that God is with His people. He is not distant from the wreckage or waiting beyond the darkness. He is an ever-present help—near enough to hold us when our thoughts will not become quiet.

Later, God says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Biblical stillness is not pretending that fear, noise, or pain is unreal. It is laying down the impossible task of controlling everything and remembering who remains sovereign. What overwhelms us still fits inside His open hand.

Reflect: Which voice has been demanding most of your attention? Set it down for a moment. Breathe slowly and confess: God is my refuge, my strength, and my present help. He is God, even here.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When the ground gives way beneath me
When the flood takes out the road
You stay with me in the wreckage
You don’t leave me on my own

When my mind won’t stop its spinning
And the night won’t let me rest
You are close enough to hold me
You quiet what is in my head

[Pre-Chorus]
I set it all down here
I will trust You in the dark

[Chorus]
Be still, my soul
He is God
Be still, my soul
He is God

My refuge and strength
My ever-present help
Be still, my soul
He is God

[Verse 2]
Every voice wants my attention
Every screen pulls at my eyes
But Your nearness cuts through all the noise
And I breathe Your peace inside

What looks too big in front of me
Fits inside Your open hand
Nothing falls outside Your keeping
You still hold all that I am

[Pre-Chorus]
I set it all down here
I will trust You in the dark

[Chorus]
Be still, my soul
He is God
Be still, my soul
He is God

My refuge and strength
My ever-present help
Be still, my soul
He is God

[Bridge]
When fear rises
When waves hit
When I can’t see
You still are God

Among the nations
Across the earth
You are exalted
You still are God

[Final Chorus]
Be still, my soul
He is God
Be still, my soul
He is God

My refuge and strength
My ever-present help
Be still, my soul
He is God

[Outro]
My refuge
My strength
My ever-present help
Be still, my soul
He is God
