About This Song

“Pray for the One Who Hurt Me” begins where Jesus’ command in Matthew 5:44 can feel hardest: after real harm, when the hurt is still present and prayer does not come easily. The narrator does not minimize the wound or pretend to feel a forgiveness that has not yet grown. Instead, the song brings anger, grief, and the desire for justice honestly before Jesus.

The chorus turns prayer into a small, difficult act of obedience: “I can pray before my heart feels ready.” It asks God to keep bitterness from taking root, to bring the other person to truth and change, and to give the wounded person wisdom and safety. Prayer is not approval of wrongdoing, and it does not make the injured person responsible for fixing the one who caused the harm.

The bridge makes an important distinction: forgiveness does not make the harm right, instantly restore trust, or require returning to an unsafe relationship. The song leaves revenge with God while asking Him to protect and heal the person who was hurt. Its hope is not that pain disappears on command, but that Jesus stays near and helps the next faithful step become possible.

Devotional

Praying When You Have Been Hurt

Read Matthew 5:43–48 and Romans 12:17–21. Jesus tells His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them. This is not a command to deny what happened or to call evil good. It is an invitation to bring even our anger and longing for justice into God’s presence rather than letting hatred take control of us.

If praying for the person who hurt you feels impossible, begin honestly. You might pray, “Jesus, You know what happened. I am angry and I am hurting. Keep me safe, bring truth into the open, and help me take one wise step.” You can pray for someone’s repentance and changed actions without excusing the harm or taking responsibility for their choices.

Forgiveness, reconciliation, and restored trust are not identical. Forgiveness does not require immediate closeness, erase consequences, or remove the need for accountability. If there is ongoing danger, seek safety and support from trusted people or qualified professionals. Setting a boundary can be wise; do not place yourself back in harm to prove that you have forgiven.

Jesus knows betrayal and injustice. He does not ask you to carry this alone or pretend that healing is instant. Ask Him for the grace to release revenge, the courage to tell the truth, and the wisdom to protect what needs protecting. A first prayer can be as small as asking Him to help you pray.

Prayer: Jesus, You see the wound and know the whole truth. Guard me from further harm and guide me toward wise support. Bring the person who hurt me to repentance and change. Keep bitterness from ruling my heart, and help me leave justice in Your hands. Give me time and grace to heal. Amen.

Lyrics

[Intro — spoken, quiet]
Jesus, You know what happened.
You know what it cost me.
I don't know how to pray for them yet.
Help me begin.

[Verse 1]
You saw the words that cut me deep
The nights I couldn't fall asleep
You heard my prayers turn into cries
You stayed beside me through the night
I want to heal, but I still ache
I bring the anger I can't shake
I won't pretend that wrong was right
I lay my hurt before Your light

[Pre-Chorus]
You say to love the ones who wound me
Pray for those who trouble me
So here I bring the truth to You
And ask You what that love can do

[Chorus]
I will pray for the one who hurt me
Though the wound is still tender and raw
Jesus, keep bitterness from ruling
As I bring You the ache and the scars
Give me courage to ask for Your justice
Give me wisdom to choose what is safe
I can pray before my heart feels ready
Lord, begin with the words I can say

[Verse 2]
I ask You, Lord, to bring them truth
Give them courage to make things new
Help them own the harm they've done
And turn from wrong toward what is good
Then guard my steps and make me wise
To keep the boundaries I need
I can forgive and still say no
Your healing doesn't need their door

[Pre-Chorus]
You say to love the ones who wound me
Pray for those who trouble me
So here I bring the truth to You
And ask You what that love can do

[Chorus]
I will pray for the one who hurt me
Though the wound is still tender and raw
Jesus, keep bitterness from ruling
As I bring You the ache and the scars
Give me courage to ask for Your justice
Give me wisdom to choose what is safe
I can pray before my heart feels ready
Lord, begin with the words I can say

[Bridge — intimate, then rising]
Forgiving doesn't make it right
Or mean the trust returns tonight
I leave revenge here in Your hands
You know the truth, You understand
Keep me from hate; keep me from fear
Be near to me as I heal here
If God is for me, I can stand
Held by Your steady, faithful hand

[Final Chorus — full, resolute]
I will pray for the one who hurt me
Though the wound is still tender and raw
Jesus, keep bitterness from ruling
As I bring You the ache and the scars
Give me courage to ask for Your justice
Give me wisdom to choose what is safe
I can pray before my heart feels ready
Lord, begin with the words I can say

[Outro — spoken, then sung]
I don't have to call the hurt okay.
I don't have to walk back into harm.
Jesus, keep my heart in Your hands.
Teach me to pray.
