About This Song
Put These Hands to Work grows out of the question behind Dust & Mercy: having recognised the mercy shown to the returning son, how do we respond when our own hearts still have issues to face? Between the two brothers’ stories, this song asks that received grace become practical kindness rather than words alone.
The neighbour’s empty chair and the unanswered phone call are scenes within the lyrics, not claims about the writer’s personal history. They make the response concrete: bringing a meal, offering company and taking a first step toward a strained relationship. The song moves from good intentions to actions that cost time and attention.
Its bridge makes the reason clear. These works do not earn God’s love or repay a free gift. Ephesians 2:8–10 places good works after grace, as the life for which believers are created in Christ. James 2 and 1 John 3 challenge love that speaks warmly but leaves a neighbour’s need untouched.

Mercy received is meant to become mercy shared.
Ephesians 2:8–9 says that salvation is a gift, not the result of works. Verse 10 then describes believers as created in Christ Jesus for good works. These truths belong together. We do not serve to make God love us; we serve because His grace has begun to change the way we live.
James 2:15–17 asks what good it does to wish someone warmth and food while withholding the help they need. First John 3:18 calls for love in action and truth, not only words. The ordinary examples in this song bring that challenge close: a meal, a visit, an attentive conversation, a call we keep postponing.
Reconciliation also requires humility. Romans 12:18 says, as far as it depends on us, to live at peace with everyone. We can own our part and offer a first step without controlling someone else’s response. Forgiveness does not require ignoring harm or abandoning wise boundaries; practical love should be truthful as well as willing.
Choose one specific act of kindness you can carry out today. Ask what would genuinely help, rather than assuming. Let it be a response to God’s mercy, not a way to collect praise or settle a spiritual debt.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Your freely given grace. Let it change what I do with my time, my attention and my hands. Give me wisdom to love practically and humility to take the next faithful step. Amen.
