About This Song
Stand Firm pairs two Scriptures that seem, at first, to belong to different songs. It stands on 1 Peter 3:14 — "even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed; do not fear their threats" — while the lyrics sing Proverbs 3:5–6 almost line for line: trust with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, and He will make your paths straight.
Together they make one statement. Standing firm is not gritting your teeth on a mountaintop; it is the quiet, repeated decision to trust when the road is hidden, when the answers are fragile, when every small decision and every greater plan has to be laid in Someone else's hands. The song's centre of gravity is the confession "I won't lean on answers, I will lean on You" — courage built not on certainty, but on the character of the One who sees what we cannot see.
The build strips it down to a single sentence prayed over and over — "I lean on You, when I don't know what to do, I lean on You" — before the final chorus plants the flag: not my wisdom, not my way. You make a way.
Devotional
"But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. 'Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.'" (1 Peter 3:14)
Peter wrote those words to believers who were paying a price for doing good. His remedy for fear is strange: not better circumstances, but a settled heart — "in your hearts revere Christ as Lord" (v. 15). You stand firm on the outside because something is settled on the inside.
That is where Proverbs 3:5–6 comes in, and why this song leans on it so heavily. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." The Hebrew picture behind "lean" is putting your full weight on something — a wall, a staff, a railing. Everyone leans on something when the road disappears: answers, plans, our own ability to figure it out. The song names the only support that holds: "I won't lean on answers, I will lean on You."
Notice the promise attached: "He will make your paths straight." Not visible — straight. You may not see around the corner, but the One who sees what you cannot see is already straightening the road ahead of you. So stand firm — not because you know what tomorrow holds, but because you know who leads you through the dark. Lean your full weight on Him. He makes a way.
