About This Song

The Rock Remains is drawn almost line for line from the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32 — the song Moses taught Israel at the end of his life, so that long after he was gone, the nation would still have the truth in their mouths. It opens the way Moses opened: calling heaven and earth as witnesses, praying that teaching would fall like gentle rain.

The writer follows the shape of the original song deliberately. Verse two remembers the desert — how God found His people in a barren land, guarded them as the apple of His eye and carried them when their strength was gone. Verse three does not look away from the hard turn in Moses' song: fields grew full and green, and the people forgot. They left the Rock who gave them birth for hollow gods of dust and earth.

But the chorus keeps returning to the confession at the centre of Deuteronomy 32:4 — the Rock, whose work is perfect and whose ways are just. Kingdoms change, idols break, nations fall; the covenant still remains. The outro says what the whole song has been building toward: when we were faithless, He stayed strong. The Rock remains.

Devotional

"He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he" (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Moses sang these words to a people about to enter a land of plenty — and he knew exactly what plenty would do to them. Full fields have a way of making hearts forgetful. Deuteronomy 32 was given as a witness in advance: when you wander, this song will remind you who never did.

Notice where the song places the certainty. Not in the people — their faithlessness is written into the very verses. The certainty is in the Rock. A rock does not shift with the weather or the age. Kingdoms change; the covenant remains. Idols promise and fail; "their rock is not like our Rock" (Deuteronomy 32:31).

The bridge holds the hardest and most hopeful lines together, because Moses did: "There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal" (Deuteronomy 32:39). The God who judges evil is the same God who makes atonement for His people and His land (Deuteronomy 32:43) — a promise that finds its fulfilment at the cross.

Reflect: Where has abundance quietly made you forgetful? Come back to the Rock who gave you birth. When we are faithless, He remains faithful — for He cannot disown Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). The Rock remains.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Give ear, O heavens, hear me speak
Let earth receive the truth we seek
May teaching fall like gentle rain
And settle softly on the plain

I will proclaim the Lord by name
Ascribe to Him the highest praise
His work is perfect, all ways right
A faithful God, unchanging light

[Pre-Chorus]
Through every age, when kingdoms change
Your covenant will still remain

[Chorus]
You are the Rock, forever the same
Perfect in power and great is Your name
Though we may wander, though nations may fall
You are still righteous, the Lord over all

You are the Rock, unchanging and strong
Heaven and earth bear witness in song
When every idol is broken and gone
You were faithful all along

[Verse 2]
You found us in the desert wild
And held us as Your treasured child
You guarded us through dust and night
And kept us as the apple of Your eye

You bore us up when strength was gone
And fed us richly all along

[Verse 3]
But when our fields were full and green
We soon forgot what we had seen
We traded glory for a lie
And bowed beneath a foreign sky

We left the Rock who gave us birth
For hollow gods of dust and earth

[Bridge]
Our idols cannot help us stand
No throne can break what You have planned
You put to death, You bring to life
You wound, You heal, You judge what's right

You alone are God and King
So all the nations rise and sing
You judge all evil, end its reign
You make atonement, cleanse the stain

[Final Chorus]
You are the Rock, forever the same
Perfect in power and great is Your name
Though we may wander, though nations may fall
You are still righteous, the Lord over all

You are the Rock, unchanging and strong
Heaven and earth bear witness in song
When every idol is broken and gone
You were faithful all along

[Outro]
When we were faithless, You stayed strong
You were faithful all along
The Rock remains
The Rock remains
