About This Song
To Live Is Christ takes its central confession from Philippians 1:21. Written from prison, Paul's words hold together two convictions: life is an opportunity to know and serve Jesus, and death cannot take away the hope of being with Him.
The first verse moves from temporary possessions, plans and applause to the lasting treasure of knowing Christ. At the cross, a life once organised around what could be gained discovers the love of the One who gave Himself.
The second verse gives that confession a practical shape: serving the weak, listening with grace, holding another person's hand and telling the story of Jesus. The bridge grounds the song's hope in Christ's resurrection. Confidence beyond the grave does not make today's life disposable; it gives purpose to the work, love and perseverance still entrusted to us.
The final refrain is both assurance and surrender: while there is breath, there is a life to offer to Christ; when He calls, there is the promise of being with Him.

To Live Is Christ
"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." — Philippians 1:21
Paul wrote these words from prison, facing possible execution. He could not lose. If he lived, he got more of Christ in life. If he died, he got more of Christ in glory. Either way, the math worked out.
Most of us would have to fill in different blanks. To live is comfort. To live is success. To live is family. To live is being liked. None of those is bad in itself. But none of them works in death. Whatever you fill the blank with that does not survive the grave will leave you bankrupt at the end.
For Paul, Christ filled both sides of the equation. Living was Christ. Dying was more Christ. There was nothing left for him to fear. The same can be true for you, if Christ is the air you breathe.
Lyrics
[Verse 1] I built my hopes on things that fade On what I owned and plans I made I chased the praise that could not stay And watched it rise and slip away But at the cross, I came to see The love that gave Your life for me No greater treasure could I find Than knowing You and being Thine [Chorus] To live is Christ, to die is gain You are my hope through joy and pain While I have breath, my heart is Yours Beyond the grave, Your love endures And when You call, I’ll see Your face Forever held within Your grace In life and death, this truth remains To live is Christ, to die is gain [Verse 2] For every day You give me here Let love be stronger than my fear Give me the strength to serve the weak The grace to listen, then to speak There’s still a hand for me to hold There’s still Your story to be told Until my earthly work is through Let all I do point back to You [Chorus] To live is Christ, to die is gain You are my hope through joy and pain While I have breath, my heart is Yours Beyond the grave, Your love endures And when You call, I’ll see Your face Forever held within Your grace In life and death, this truth remains To live is Christ, to die is gain [Bridge] The grave could never hold my King So death has lost its final sting Because You rose, I too shall rise And see Your glory with my eyes Until that day, my work is here To love, to serve, to persevere Through every trial, through every loss I’ll follow You and bear my cross [Final Chorus] To live is Christ, to die is gain You are my hope through joy and pain While I have breath, my heart is Yours Beyond the grave, Your love endures And when You call, I’ll see Your face Forever held within Your grace In life and death, this truth remains To live is Christ, to die is gain [Outro] While I have breath, I’ll praise Your name To live is Christ, to die is gain
