About This Song
Walk Before Me is Abram's story sung in the first person. Twenty-four years after the promise, still childless, ninety-nine years old — and God appears not with a timetable but with a command and a name: "I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully" (Genesis 17:1). The song lives in that long middle stretch where the answer has not come and the waiting feels too long. God does not explain everything. He simply says: I am faithful. I am here. Walk before Me. Carry on.
Devotional
"When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, 'I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless'" (Genesis 17:1).
Notice what God did not say. He did not explain the twenty-four-year delay. He did not hand Abram a schedule. He gave him two things instead: a name — El Shaddai, God Almighty, the God who is enough — and a direction: walk before Me.
To walk before God is not to walk ahead of Him, and not to trail behind in fear like a servant being watched. It is to live every step in His sight, hidden roads and all, like a child whose Father's eyes never leave them.
The waiting seasons are where this song is meant to be sung: when the promise feels far, the answer has not come, and the only prayer left is one more step, one more day.
Reflect: What promise are you still waiting on? Instead of asking God for the timetable this week, try Abram's assignment — just the next step, taken in His sight.
