About This Song
Of all the names of God in Scripture, one was not announced from a mountain or declared by a prophet. It was given by a runaway slave girl in the desert.
Hagar had been used, mistreated, and driven out. She was pregnant, alone, beside a spring on the road to Shur — about as invisible as a person can be. And there the angel of the LORD found her, called her by name, and spoke to her future. Her response gave God a name no one had used before: El Roi — "You are the God who sees me" (Genesis 16:13).
This song was written for everyone who has ever felt like Hagar: overlooked, unheard, carrying hidden battles the world passes by and never knows. The desert imagery of the first verse comes straight from her story — the wild winds, the empty hands, the Name that arrives before the cry does.
And the bridge deliberately reaches forward from Genesis to the Gospels: the God who saw Hagar is the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to come after the one (Luke 15:4), and He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Being seen by Him is not a moment. It is a covenant.

Hagar did not find God in the desert. God found Hagar. She was not praying, not seeking, not even heading in a good direction — she was running away. And still the angel of the LORD "found her near a spring in the desert" (Genesis 16:7).
That order matters. Before she ever said "You are the God who sees me," He had already seen her, already followed her, already called her by name. Our being seen never depends on our being impressive, or even on our being found in the right place.
Perhaps you are in a season where you feel entirely unseen — the hidden battles, the tears no one counts, the prayers that seem to land in silence. El Roi is not a sentiment; it is His name. Every heartbeat, every prayer, has always met Him there.
El Roi, God who sees me — thank You that You called my name before I cried, that I am never forgotten and never alone. Open my eyes to see You seeing me, and let that be enough. Amen.
