From the album Teach Us to Pray
About This Song
Of all the things Jesus taught us to ask for, "daily bread" may be the most quietly radical. Not bread for the month. Not a storehouse. Bread for today — and the trust that tomorrow's Father will still be faithful tomorrow.
This song grew out of that one line, together with the old prayer of Proverbs 30: "Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread." The writer had noticed how much of worry is really tomorrow's questions crowding into today — counting every unanswered question, and missing what has already been given.
So the song became a prayer of enough. Enough bread for the road. Enough strength for the way. Kept from fear on one side and greed on the other, learning generosity in plenty and trust in little. Morning by morning, His mercies are new — and He has never once failed to be enough.
Devotional
Manna could not be stored. Whatever Israel gathered beyond the day's need bred worms by morning. It was not a design flaw — it was the lesson. God was teaching a people to trust Him one day at a time.
"Give us today our daily bread" is that same lesson in prayer form. It asks for provision, but it also asks for freedom: keep me from fear, which hoards, and from greed, which never has enough. When there is plenty, make me generous. When there is little, teach me trust.
What are you carrying today that actually belongs to tomorrow? Jesus said tomorrow will worry about itself. Today's assignment is simpler: receive today's bread, and thank the Giver.
Father, provide what You know I need. You are my portion and my stay — and You will be enough for today. Amen.
