From the album Let Us Pray
About This Song
Written for quiet time, this opening prayer asks that background music help turn attention back to the reason for praying: to know God and receive His truth. It begins Let Us Pray by moving from surrounding noise toward a listening heart, remembering that life in Christ rests on His grace rather than our own understanding.
Psalm 119:18 asks God to open the reader’s eyes to the wonders of His law. The song carries that request into everyday Bible reading. Scripture is not merely information to collect; through it God teaches, corrects and equips His people. The prayer is therefore not only to understand the words, but to live them.
The refrain brings eyes and heart together. Seeing the truth and welcoming its correction belong together, and the bridge asks that listening become a life increasingly shaped by Christ.
Devotional
Before you read, become willing to be taught.
Psalm 119:18 is a prayer of dependence: the psalmist has God’s Word before him, yet still asks for opened eyes. We do not approach Scripture as people who already know everything we need. We come as those who need God to teach us, correct our assumptions and lead us into obedience.
Second Timothy 3:16–17 describes Scripture as useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Some passages comfort us; others challenge what we would rather leave untouched. Both are gifts. James warns against hearing the Word without doing what it says. A meaningful quiet time is not measured only by how much we have read, but by whether we receive the truth with a willing heart.
Read a short passage slowly today. Ask what it reveals about God, what it corrects in you, and what faithful response it invites. Keep the music in the background and give the words of Scripture your attention.
Prayer: Father, open my eyes to Your truth. Give me humility where I assume I already understand, and courage to obey what You show me. Let Your Word lead me closer to Jesus and shape the way I live. Amen.
Lyrics
[Intro] Open my eyes Open my heart Lead me into truth [Verse 1] I lay aside the noise around me I quiet every restless thought Your Word is living, true and steady Teach me to live what You have taught Within the words upon these pages Beyond the things I think I know Reveal the beauty of Your kingdom And show me where You want me to go [Chorus] Open my eyes to see the wonders Written in every word You speak Open my heart to know You better Give understanding as I read Let every page become a pathway Drawing me closer into truth Open my eyes Open my heart And lead me nearer, Lord, to You [Verse 2] Correct the places where I wander Renew the way I think and live Give me more than information Shape me through the truth You give Let every promise build my courage Let every warning guard my way Let every story point to Jesus And teach my heart to trust today [Chorus] Open my eyes to see the wonders Written in every word You speak Open my heart to know You better Give understanding as I read Let every page become a pathway Drawing me closer into truth Open my eyes Open my heart And lead me nearer, Lord, to You [Bridge] Speak, Lord, I am listening Plant Your Word within Teach me, change me, lead me Make me more like You [Final Chorus] Open my eyes to see the wonders Written in every word You speak Open my heart to know You better Give understanding as I read Let every page become a pathway Drawing me closer into truth Open my eyes Open my heart And lead me nearer, Lord, to You [Outro] Open my eyes Open my heart Lead me into truth
