From the album Let Us Pray
About This Song
This song grew from the desire for quiet-time music that reminds the listener why we pray and who we are in Christ. Here that reminder becomes a personal invitation: instead of presenting a polished version of ourselves, we can bring our real hearts before the God on whom we depend.
Psalm 139 ends with a request to be searched, tested and led in the everlasting way. The song follows that movement from hidden motives and anxious thoughts toward repentance and renewed obedience. Its image of the Word as a mirror echoes James 1: a truthful encounter calls for a response rather than a quick look away.
The bridge places correction within the mercy made known through the Saviour’s suffering. Being searched by God is not an invitation to despair over our failures, but to stop hiding and receive the grace that restores us.
Devotional
Honest prayer does not require hiding the parts of your heart that need to change.
In Psalm 139, God already knows the psalmist completely. The final request, “Search me,” is not an attempt to give God information He lacks. It is a willing surrender to His knowledge and leading. We ask Him to show us what we excuse, overlook or fear admitting.
James compares hearing God’s Word without acting on it to looking into a mirror and then forgetting what we have seen. Correction becomes fruitful when we remain attentive and respond. That might mean confessing resentment, making an apology, or naming an anxious habit we have allowed to govern our choices.
First John 1:9 directs confession toward God’s faithfulness and forgiveness. Our hope is not that careful self-examination makes us worthy of His love. Our hope is His mercy in Christ. Let His truth uncover what needs to change without turning honest repentance into endless self-condemnation.
Pause and ask: Is there something I already know I need to bring into the light? Take one clear step of repentance today.
Prayer: Search me, Father, and lead me in Your way. Give me courage to confess what is wrong, trust Your forgiveness, and receive Your correction. Make my life truthful before You. Amen.
Lyrics
[Intro] Search me, God Know my heart Lead me in the way of life [Verse 1] Meet me in the quiet places Where no other eyes can see Bring the hidden into daylight Show me what is true in me Where my motives turn to shadow Where my pride has made its home Let Your mercy meet me gently Lead me back where I belong [Chorus] Search me, God, and know my heart Test me, know my anxious thoughts Show me where my heart has strayed Draw me back to truth and grace Lead me in the way of life Keep me walking in Your light Search me, God, and make me true Let my life belong to You [Verse 2] When Your Word becomes a mirror Give me courage not to turn Where correction meets resistance Give me grace enough to learn Break the habits I have carried Name the fears I try to hide Shape my heart through truth and mercy Keep me walking by Your side [Chorus] Search me, God, and know my heart Test me, know my anxious thoughts Show me where my heart has strayed Draw me back to truth and grace Lead me in the way of life Keep me walking in Your light Search me, God, and make me true Let my life belong to You [Bridge] In Your mercy, You restore me Through the wounds my Saviour bore Let Your Spirit work within me Till I hide from You no more [Final Chorus] Search me, God, and know my heart Test me, know my anxious thoughts Show me where my heart has strayed Draw me back to truth and grace Lead me in the way of life Keep me walking in Your light Search me, God, and make me true Let my life belong to You [Outro] Search me, God Know my heart Lead me in the way of life
