About This Song
The Cross on My Shoulder is the second witness of From Garden to Dawn: Simon of Cyrene, the pilgrim who was seized from the roadside and forced to carry the cross of a Man he did not know (Luke 23:26). Simon had travelled a long way to keep the Passover — he came to offer a sacrifice, and found himself walking beside the Lamb. The song holds the two loads side by side: the timber on Simon's shoulder, and the judgment on Jesus. One was forced; the other was chosen — "they forced my hands upon the beam, but no one forced His love." The turn comes at the hill, when Simon's part is done and he watches them lay the Man on the wood he carried: "I thought that I was carrying Him — now I know: He carried me." It is every believer's discovery. We think we are bearing the cross, until we realise the Cross has been bearing us all along.
Devotional
"As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus" (Luke 23:26).
Simon did not volunteer. He was compelled — pulled out of the crowd into the most important procession in history. And notice where the cross put him: "behind Jesus." That is exactly where Jesus said His disciples would walk: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" (Mark 8:34). Simon did it literally before anyone did it spiritually.
Mark's Gospel adds a quiet detail: Simon was "the father of Alexander and Rufus" (Mark 15:21) — names the early church clearly knew. The interrupted pilgrim seems to have become a believer, and his sons after him. The load he never chose became the grace his family never lost.
Reflect: What load are you carrying that you never chose? Illness, a broken family, a duty that landed on your shoulders? Simon's story says the unchosen cross can put you closer to Jesus than the plans you made. And it whispers the deeper truth: whatever you are carrying, He is carrying you.
Lyrics
[Narration] I travelled from Cyrene for the Passover. I came to Jerusalem to worship, not to see an execution. I did not know the condemned man. I was just too near the road when a soldier pointed at me: "You! The Cyrenian! Take the beam." [Verse 1] The street was filled with shouting, Dust rose beneath their feet. Three prisoners moved between the spears, But One could barely breathe. His back was torn and bleeding, A crown pressed against His head. The soldier pushed me forward And pointed to the wood beside Him. I said, "This is not my sentence." He said, "Today it is your load." And suddenly the Stranger Was walking with me down the road. [Chorus] The cross was on my shoulder, But the judgment was on Him. I carried wood through Jerusalem — He carried all our sin. They forced my hands upon the beam, But no one forced His love. The cross was on my shoulder, But the sacrifice was His. [Verse 2] At first I cursed the soldiers, I cursed the crowd and me, I cursed the heavy timber And the blood beneath my feet. But He did not curse the mockers, He did not answer hate with hate. Though every step was agony, He walked as one who chose the way. [Narration] Women were weeping by the road. He could hardly stand — yet He turned toward them. Not toward the soldiers, not toward the men who mocked Him. Toward them. His grief was not for Himself. I had heard men beg for mercy. I had heard condemned men lie. But I had never seen a dying man look so completely alive. [Chorus] The cross was on my shoulder, But the judgment was on Him. I carried wood through Jerusalem — He carried all our sin. They forced my hands upon the beam, But no one forced His love. The cross was on my shoulder, But the sacrifice was His. [Bridge – Narration] "Put it down," they said at the hill. They took the timber from me. My shoulders were bruised, my hands were stained with His blood. I thought my part was finished — then they laid Him on the cross. [Bridge] I carried it for part of the road, He carried it all the way — Beyond the nails, beyond the hill, Beyond the closing grave. I bore the weight against my back, He bore what I could never see. I thought that I was carrying Him — Now I know: He carried me. [Final Chorus] The cross was on my shoulder, But salvation came through Him. I carried wood through Jerusalem — He carried all our sin. They forced my hands upon the beam, But no one forced His love. The cross was on my shoulder, But the victory would be His. [Outro – Narration] I came to Jerusalem to offer a sacrifice. Instead, I walked beside One.
