From the album Teach Us to Pray
About This Song
When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He did not give them a theory. He gave them words — and the first requests in those words are not about us at all. Before daily bread, before forgiveness, before deliverance: Your name. Your kingdom. Your will.
This song closes the album where the whole journey was pointing: the prayer the Lord Himself taught, sung phrase by phrase. But the writer wanted one small shift in emphasis — the word "here." Here in my heart. Here in my home. Because it is easy to pray "Your kingdom come" over the world in general, and much harder to pray it over the corners we still call our own.
The second verse walks through the rest of the prayer — the mercy we give because we first received it, the temptation, the deliverance — and the bridge lands on the doxology: Yours is the kingdom, the power, the glory. Yours is my morning, my night, the road — and my life.
Devotional
Every kingdom has a throne, and every heart has one too. "Your kingdom come" is a dangerous prayer to pray honestly, because it means asking the King to take a seat that something else is currently occupying.
Notice how Jesus structured the prayer: God's name, kingdom, and will come first; our bread, forgiveness, and protection follow. It is not that our needs don't matter — the second half of the prayer proves they do. It is that our needs find their right size once God is in His right place.
Where is the corner you still call your own — a relationship, a plan, a fear, a grudge? Pray the prayer over that room specifically: come reign in every corner I still have called my own.
Our Father in heaven, holy is Your name. Here in my heart, here in my home — have Your way and take Your throne. Let Your kingdom come. Amen.
